Mikhail Itkis was born in Odessa, Ukraine, in 1968. His family moved to Queens, NY in 1979. He was accepted to Stuyvesant HS in Manhattan in 1983. He graduated in 1987 with a strong interest in engineering. He was accepted to Cornell University’s College of Engineering in 1987 and graduated with a degree in electrical engineering in 1991. While in school, he had internships at Merrill Lynch in NY and IBM in Florida.


After graduating from Cornell, Itkis moved back to NYC, where he worked in several companies in the financial sector, including Societe Generale, Merrill Lynch, and Bank of NY. At various times, he worked as an employee of the firm or as a contractor. His duties progressed from network and system administration to various IT management positions and more emphasis on information security. His professional certifications include CISSP, Security+, Network+, PMP, and MCSE.


Itkis enlisted in the US Army Reserve in 2009. He graduated from Basic Combat Training in Ft Jackson and from Advanced Individual Training as Civil Affairs Specialist in Fort Bragg. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Signal Corps while serving with the 411 Civil Affairs Battalion in Danbury, CT in 2010. Following a promotion to 1st Lieutenant, he deployed with his unit to Djibouti, Africa in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2012. In 2015, he was a member of a Civil Affairs team assigned to exchange best practices with Ukrainian CIMIC officers at the National Defense University in Kiev. His current rank is Captain and he is assigned to the 353 Civil Affairs Command.
